ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the industrial and aesthetic shifts in French cinema from the arrival of synchronized sound films in France in 1928 to the German Occupation in 1940. In addition, it offers a brief survey of the work of the eight most prolific French film composers during these years. The highlighted composers include Georges Auric, Arthur Honegger, Jacques Ibert, Maurice Jaubert, Joseph Kosma, Vincent Scotto, Georges Van Parys, and Jean Wiéner.
