ABSTRACT

The education of autistic children in the early stages has to cover every aspect of their life. Most autistic children do seem to respond spontaneously to music; many of the parents report that they have found it to be the only thing that will calm the children or hold their attention apart from their own obsessional behaviours. In order to encourage children to learn how to place new sounds correctly in their mouth and to control the expulsion of their breath in making sounds, they are sometimes taught gestures to aid the process, such as blowing across their hand or placing their finger on their lip in a particular way. Most of the children seem to have unusually good long-term memory and so recognize the audiologist and his equipment on the second visit; by the third visit they will usually accept the earphones.
