ABSTRACT

The point of departure for this chapter is Biesta’s philosophy of education, where he posits the belief that education must consist of three interconnected dimensions – namely, qualification, socialisation, and subjectification. What this multidimensional concept entails for music education is thus scrutinised using various examples in relation to the application and results of music education research. The discussion also includes a critical review of the philosophical foundations of Biesta’s thinking, with a particular focus on the substantial influence exerted on Biesta’s views by Rancière. The chapter concludes with the assumption that under certain conditions and with specific theoretical modifications, the threefold understanding of the composite and profoundly interrelated domains of education may be useful for a sociological approach to music education.
