ABSTRACT

The institutions of interest are the State Archive of the Arkhangelsk Oblast, Arkhangelsk Regional Museum, Arkhangelsk Museum of Fine Arts, Arkhangelsk Local History Museum, and the Northern Maritime Museum. Towards their functional roles as specialists, educators, and researchers, librarians and archivists across Arkhangelsk engage in five general categories of work: Creating guidebooks, finding aids, and catalogues; curating exhibitions; training future archivists, librarians, and historians; participating in original research projects and publications; and conducting genealogical research. At the beginning of the 20th century, the central government supported plans to create a scientific local history centre that would unite an historical archive, a local history museum, a local library, and an educational institution aimed at training specialists for work in the Far North. Across library and archival centres in Arkhangelsk, most staff focus on traditional archivist-related tasks rather than on original research.
