ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses rephotography, or repeat photography, the practice of photographing specific geographic locations from vantage points determined by historic image research. It details specific collaborations with various institutions, archivists, and librarians, demonstrating the relationship between pre-fieldwork research and in-field photographic execution, as well as the collaborative nature of the project. The chapter includes in-depth discussions of two case studies demonstrating this methodology, as well as a review of the history and development of rephotography as a methodology. In the long story, rephotography is one of the central tools used to approach the complexity of mediating climate change and environmental challenges. The long story simply implies that works related to climate change must be viewed as challenges that span across the historical and present and have no ending in a near future.
