ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the study of Portuguese tile decorations aided by digital technologies and more generally on the field of digital art history, will refer to these two temporal dimensions—the speed that characterizes the contemporary technological world and the stillness required to reflect and carry out certain tasks. The idea that Portugal is the land of azulejos is confirmed by the country’s tile decorations, a constant and distinctive presence in the landscape from the late fifteenth century to the present day. Aside from its continuous and widespread use throughout the centuries, the azulejo stands out for its ability to reinvent itself and adapt to different contexts. Given such a wide and complex research field, the idea of creating a space in which to gather a maximum of information about azulejos became very appealing.
