ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to help conceptualize why the human–animal bond is so significant and unique. Attention will be given to these human–animal interactions, and provide information on the physical as well as psychosocial benefits of having animals in the lives. The chapter provides a framework by which to better understand the various theories used to explain the bonds with other living beings. Over the past 50 years, science has begun to catch up with what people have known intuitively for centuries – animals are good for the well-being, and they contribute tremendously to the quality of life. The American Veterinary Medical Association defines the human–animal bond: as a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and other animals that is influenced by behaviors that are essential to the health and well-being of both.
