ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the very tension in Arab and Muslim religious contexts and aims to build a better understanding of not only the inherent values of peace within the religion, but also the limited role prescribed for violence. It shows that identified important Islamic assumptions, principles and values that constitute the basic elements of an Islamic peacebuilding and nonviolent approach to all types and levels of conflicts. As peace and justice are interconnected within Islam, these two values, not to mention the sacredness of human life, also serve as a basis for nonviolent action within Islam. Even when violence for the purpose of defense or defensive war is permitted, the Qur'an prescribes limits on this violence. The reality is that most religious identities are often misused to promote violence and violent conflict. Pluralism and diversity are core values in Islamic tradition and religion.
