ABSTRACT

This chapter examines two of the leading Buddhist peacebuilders, Sulak Sivaraksa and Maha Ghosananda. It discusses the Asia-based peacebuilding initiatives that the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB) have introduced. A long-time vision of Sulak Sivaraksa's, the INEB Institute is a recent, alternative education initiative held under the auspices of the INEB. The numerous organizations Sulak has founded and is involved with—including the Spirit in Education Movement, INEB Institute and the Wongsanit Ashram, among others—are vehicles designed to preserve and transmit his message of the need for Buddhist-based social engagement and change. Another significant figure in Southeast Asian Buddhist social engagement and peacebuilding is the late Cambodian monk, Venerable Maha Ghosananda. The initial group consisted of a few members looking to connect and support socially aware Buddhists in Asia and western countries. In 2015, INEB co-sponsored a third summit with Buddhist and Muslim leaders in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
