ABSTRACT

The concept of chromatic mediants is rarely introduced in a way that showcases the significance and strength of the relationship between the respective chords. When chromatic mediants are introduced, it is usually in a sterile way, explaining the basic parameters of the relationship, followed by demonstrative excerpts of music. A more effective method to introduce chromatic mediants is through film music examples, which provide immediate narrative context. Rather than using examples unfamiliar to students to introduce and illustrate chromatic mediants, students can better understand these chords through their use in film music, which provides a narrative context.
