ABSTRACT
In this lesson, students learn to aurally identify chromatic harmonies and modulations as they listen to a full movement by singing simple, improvised figurations built on the guide-tone line. While tracking the movement’s tonal plan, students discover a surprising harmonic twist that raises significant interpretive questions about its overall design. As students explore these questions, they discover important musical relationships that span the entire movement and reveal the hidden treasures it contains.
