ABSTRACT

While the number of theoretical topics for the post-tonal classroom now expands beyond set theory and serialism, these techniques remain pillars of twentieth-century study. As a result, it is worth refining our pedagogical approach for these post-tonal fundamentals, striving to make them both more intellectually accessible and musically relevant. This lesson plan is an aural skills introduction to twelve-tone music that can be implemented in both the written and skills settings. Through a three-step process that can be replicated with other dodecaphonic works, the end goal is a detailed pitch and narrative analysis of Luigi Dallapiccola’s “Vespro, tutto riporti” from his Cinque Frammenti di Saffo.
