ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that one of the overall curricular goals in a music theory sequence should be to foster curiosity about music in our students. Promoting this question-seeking attitude begins with an instructor creating a supportive environment for students to explore; the chapter examines the five dimensions of curiosity (Kashdan et al. 2018) as factors that encourage students or inhibit them from being inquisitive. Finally, it offers specific examples of assignments and activities to show what this kind of cultivation might look like in a theory classroom.
