ABSTRACT

This chapter represents a case study based on a project carried out between 2012 and 2014 in five European universities. The project combines language tandems and bilingual courses in mutual immersion, focusing on French and the language of the country-in this case Romanian and Slovak.

In the beginning, we will present an overview of the international project entitled “Tandem, bilingualism and acquisition of subject matter knowledge-FLE/FOS in contact with languages of Central and Eastern Europe”, including the context, prerequisites, different activities and obtained results (textbook, website and database intended for research on didactics of language tandems). We will then describe the gathering of the pedagogical material and the creation of the textbook for tandems. This description will be followed by comments on how teachers and learners can use the textbook. Finally, we will endeavour to highlight the two original aspects of our approach: the insertion of the tandem into an immersive mechanism composed of three elements (bilingual sessions in mutual immersion, face-to-face pair activities, institutional and professional immersion into the hosting culture), and the adaptation of the tandem for professional language learning (for medical purposes).
