ABSTRACT

Elegant, odd, and contrary desires matter in an increasingly pragmatic and performative world. Ideas are autonomous; they live a life of their own. Architecture has always been informed by technology. The catalyst for nearly every major advancement within the discipline of architecture has been a parallel development of technology. The late Robin Evans famously stated that architects, unlike other creators such as painters or sculptors have the peculiar distinction of never working directly with the medium of their creation, but instead work exclusively through intervening mediums such as drawings or models. More recently, as computational design has engaged materiality through processes of digital fabrication, we have seen the target medium for design investigation move. With a material-based design process, the capabilities and limitations of both matter and fabrication become latent design opportunities that can drive the design process. Each project was pre-calibrated to capitalize on specific design opportunities enabled by the capabilities and constraints of additive manufacturing.
