ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the nature of artificial intelligence (AI) and suggests how architectural designers should work with it. It also explains the nature of AI technology through the well-known examples of Deep Learning and IBM’s Watson. The term Deep Learning indicates a certain range of machine learning methods frequently used for image classification, and the typical algorithm is a deep-layered artificial neural network, which is trained by a collection of labeled image data. The continuing deployment of Deep Learning systems to many applications suggests that complex, intelligent behavior can be successfully replicated by the signal processing of massive quantities of simple calculations in the neurons and connections of these systems. IBM’s Watson is an implementation of a Deep Question Answering system. A Question Answering system takes questions by humans and then answers the questions in the form of a natural language.
