ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author discusses his work with spatial pixels: from multiple projection surfaces, to volumes of space occupied by the artwork, to spatial operating environments at Oblong Industries. Shoreline equivalent recreates observations of sand patterns at the beach by generating and projecting waves through the gallery space: across the floor, up the walls, and into the corners of the room. The system is generated from a series of digitized, hand-drawn visuals that are rendered according to an underlying fluid dynamics simulation that responds to the movement of the viewers. Oblong was founded in 2006, a few years after John Underkoffler helped design the spatial computing and gesture interfaces for the film Minority Report. A researcher could walk over and explore their own corner of the dataset and call someone else over as well. Spatial tracking allows to create intuitive, human gestures for data navigation and interaction.
