ABSTRACT

Historic architecture draws tourists and travelers with the promise of forging a connection to the past. This chapter investigates what factors in historic building renovation and rehabilitation affect tourist reactions to the preservation and adaptive reuse efforts at the Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona, Spain. It aims to determine how these architectural interventions and renovations to the historic buildings influence tourists' experience of the place. The chapter also aims to create general directives for designers to addresses heritage preservation in architecture of touristic sites in Barcelona and globally. It examines the usefulness and efficacy of combining researcher-led and participant-led photo-elicitation in investigating popular architectural tourism sites. In architectural research, photo-elicitation can be used to understand relationships to place. Photographs facilitate respondent-to-researcher connections and become a driver for conversation. Photo-elicitation employs images as a means of communication between the researcher and participants in the field.
