ABSTRACT

People are different and therefore reading habits are different as well. Philosophy is not at all the reciting of great ideas from famous people. Philosophy is a way of engaging with problems big and small. Philosophy is thus – as every tool – designed to ‘do something’. Philosophy is not just a ‘party-gag’ to convince others about how much one knows about all these – mostly already dead – philosophers. With the wider spread of the Christian faith throughout the Roman Empire, philosophy turned into scholastic philosophy. The relation between the mind and the body is the field of the philosophy of the mind. Especially the philosophy of the mind shares a lot of ground with empirical psychological attempts to understand the mind and the brain. The extended matter is the physical body, existing in space and time, while the thinking matter is the soul, the spirit or – to use a more current term – the mind.
