ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to review the vulnerability of urban nature to climate change and to provide some guidance on its assessment, with a focus on urban forests. Understanding the vulnerability of urban nature to climate change is important to guide the direction of a climate-sensitive and adaptive management. Regardless of the system, climate change vulnerability always takes significant meaning from its social context. Despite the attention that urban forests receive as the critical component of green infrastructure and as a solution to urban sustainability problems, including climate adaptation, their performance may be compromised due to their vulnerability to a changing climate. The workshops introduced key climate change information and scenarios then elicited perceived exposures, sensitivities, and adaptive strategies from the participants. Climate is one of the main determinants of forest cover and tree species distribution across the globe.
