ABSTRACT

Urban nature is experienced in particular places to which people can become attached. Bengaluru is one of India’s largest and fastest growing cities, famous internationally for its information technology companies. Kaikondrahalli Lake is surrounded by high density urban growth. Restoration efforts began with a collaboration between the municipality (BBMP) and an informal collective of local residents, who then invited inputs from people with specific expertise in areas such as ecology and architecture. The Carbon Landscape is an initiative to restore and link up wetland habitats in the northwest England landscape that fueled the industrial revolution in the United Kingdom (UK). The initiative aims to reconnect local people to what has been considered a scarred and neglected landscape. Ecological restoration of this landscape has been aided by the contribution of a huge amount of volunteer time and activity. A planned ‘Carbon Trail’ will traverse the Carbon Landscape and incorporate interpretive elements to communicate the story of the landscape.
