ABSTRACT

Intergovernmental bodies engaged in urban greening include those from the United Nations such as UN-Habitat and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Whilst there is no intergovernmental body dedicated to urban ecology, nature is being integrated into the world's towns and cities by efforts to use urban green infrastructure as a solution to the many challenges of urbanization. At the time of the Convention on Biological Diversity Convention of the Parties 10 meeting in Nagoya in October 2010, in partnership with Local Governments for Sustainability and UN-Habitat, UNEP published six case studies of the management of biodiversity and ecosystems in and around African cities. The program is focused on cities in developing countries with high percentages of their population living in informal settlements and its primary partners are local and city governments which normally have responsibility for public open space.
