ABSTRACT

A city that comprehensively meets the flourishing concept can be said to be a biophilic city: one that contains abundant nature. The Biophilic Cities Network links cities from around the globe dedicated to improving the connection between residents and urban nature. The Biophilic Cities Network recognizes the false dichotomies of urban/nature and sees cities as profoundly embedded in complex, interconnected, and beautiful ecosystems. Biophilic Cities understand the importance of restoring nature and fostering connections with nature at every planning and design scale in the city. The Biophilic Cities, as cities of abundant nature and biodiversity, aspire to create connected ecological networks. The Biophilic Cities Network often describes Biophilic Cities as adopting a ‘whole of city’ approach; that is, nature should be all around where people work and live, with the inherently spaces connected to a larger network that permits access to even more extensive forms of nature.
