ABSTRACT

When Alexander Graham Bell first envisioned a telephone, it’s hard to imagine he would have envisioned the modern smartphones we have today or the variety of smartphones that exists on this planet. Most likely, whatever career readers go into once they graduate, they will need to use a smartphone to communicate with their boss, colleagues, clients, and the public. Thus, in this chapter, readers will think about the most effective ways to write with and for smartphones and how those smartphones are connected to people, places, and things. Before doing so, readers will first weigh the consequences, both good and bad, of using smartphones and what roles writers play in those consequences. Then, after examining a student example of a smartphone app, readers will learn suggestions for developing their own apps by considering the frontend and backend operations.
