ABSTRACT

To design means to imagine something new, to set out with a plan for creating and making function a concept, an idea, or a thing, that will influence in some way an audience. Writing is in fact designing, and developing an awareness of how writers plan, shape, and create a text so that they will influence their intended audience is ultimately approaching the act of designing rhetorically. For writers to be successful at communicating their ideas, they also need to learn how to apply basic design principles while using technologies to create their texts. Chapter 5, thus, presents examples of how to use design principles, such as those relating to color, size, alignment, typography, repetition, and emphasis.
