Teaching at Advanced Level is regarded by some teachers as either a reward or a respite from the challenges of teaching Years 7–11, a chance to relax and enjoy the subject with pupils who have chosen to be there. It is true that A Level teaching can be hugely pleasurable for both pupils and teachers, but it is also worth remembering that really good A Level teaching is, in its own way, as least as demanding as any other aspect of teaching. English at Advanced Level in England is predominantly focused on GCE A Level but there has been a growth in the IB and a small take-up of the Cambridge Pre-U examination, particularly among independent schools. The Assessment Objectives (AO) for each of the English suite of subjects at A Level signify the key aspects of each of the disciplines.
