ABSTRACT

This chapter situates participatory plant breeding in the changing context of China and the challenges facing the country, especially in agriculture, and summarizes 20 years of participatory plant breeding, with a focus on maize. Further, it highlights the roles of women in Chinese agriculture and participatory plant breeding, and explains the key policy and legal aspects that affect efforts at participatory plant breeding in China. The authors conclude with some reflections on this 20-year journey and how participatory plant breeding can help China to address the challenges of achieving a ‘green transformation’ and sustainable development.
