ABSTRACT

Reprogenetic technologies, which combine the power of reproductive technologies with the tools of genetic science and technology, affect some of the most important aspects of human existence. Their development and use raise a broad host of ethical and epistemic issues. An appropriate response to these issues requires an adequate understanding of what they involve. Such understanding will be flawed unless we attend to the gendered nature of reprogenetic technologies and to the social context in which these technologies are developed and implemented. The goal of this chapter is to provide a brief overview of the ways in which recognizing the gendered nature of reprogenetics leads to a more sound analysis of these technologies, one that gives us not only a correct description of reprogenetic technologies but also reveals the ways in which they might either exacerbate or undermine gender oppression.
