ABSTRACT

The goal of this chapter is to map out feminist approaches to concepts in the social sciences and to discuss how these efforts have affected knowledge production and theory-building in feminist and non-feminist studies, with a particular emphasis on the internationalized field of gender and politics within the purview of the discipline of political science. It first discusses why concepts and conceptualization are so important to non-feminist and feminist studies. Next, a deeper dive is made into feminist approaches to concepts through the approach of “gender concepts in analysis.” The chapter then turns to the disappointing and limited reception of feminist conceptualization by non-feminist political science. The conclusion discusses implications and next steps in light of the work on feminist conceptualization and the persistent lack of engagement of most non-feminist political studies for political science more generally.
