ABSTRACT

This chapter presents critical insights gleaned from researching and writing about queer youth media producers and the media they’ve created. It provides advice for pre-writing considerations, such as ethical frameworks and project scope, as well as suggestions for creating clear and convincing analysis. “Participatory media” by definition suggests that multiple parties outside the scope of traditional media industries have been involved in the production and circulation of the object. Writing about participatory media can at times feel like a daunting task. Writers’ have to analyze: the text itself; the text’s social, economic, infrastructural, technical, and political contexts; and the interpersonal conditions that shape their understanding of any participatory action research they may conduct.
