ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the audio commentary as a form of what the author calls “extracurricular scholarship” through the case of the collaborative commentary she recorded with film scholar LaMonda Horton-Stallings for the Milestone Films Release of Losing Ground. Milestone proposed an audio commentary that diverged from the usual DVD extras yet returned to the genre’s earlier form. As writer Andrew Eagan points out, audio commentary, largely absent from streaming services due partly to technology limits and licensing limits, remains an “extra” or “bonus” associated with physical media. Along with the main feature, these “deluxe” editions of a film include added material such as deleted scenes, interviews, trailers, production stills, and more due to the DVD’s storage capacity.
