ABSTRACT

The teeth are remarkably versatile tools. They are used to chew food, to help produce speech sounds, to enhance the smile, and to maintain the vertical dimension of the face. They may also be used to cut a piece of thread or to hold a pipe, pencil, or carpentry nails. And on special occasions, they may be used in making love or as weapons of attack or defense. There is reason to believe that this has been the state of affairs since the origin of the human species.
