ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the nature and extent of collaborative evaluation in sport and leisure. Collaborative evaluation offers a distinctive approach to understanding, designing, and implementing evaluation in sport and leisure. We discuss the value of taking a collaborative approach to evaluation and outline collaborative evaluation principles and practices. Drawing on real-world examples from the sport and leisure literature, this chapter discusses and illustrates key components of collaborative evaluation. Despite the benefits of collaborative evaluation, very few applications in sport and leisure exist to date. The existing literature, nonetheless, provides valuable insights into key components of collaborative evaluation, even when this literature does not explicitly use collaborative evaluation principles or terminology. We conclude by exploring implications for future collaborative evaluation scholarship and practice in sport and leisure. We suggest three areas to strengthen collaborative evaluation in sport and leisure: synthesising and learning from existing knowledge; experimenting with collaborative evaluation designs; and building collaborative evaluation capacity.
