ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a self-psychologically treatment of a 27 years old female patient with restrictive type anorexia (AN). The anorexic symptoms revealed the patient's extreme guilt for taking up space in the world, expressed in her morbid wish to die instead of fallen soldiers because "obviously" they were more important than her. She could not trust human beings to be reliable selfobjects, nor believe that anyone would agree to serve as a genuine selfobject for her. In therapy, she could gradually absorb empathic mirroring and put herself at the center. While her weight stayed slightly below the target weight all along the treatment, she no longer lost weight; and she could maintain meaningful relationships without giving up her emotional needs
