ABSTRACT

New technologies, such as phone-based apps, online tools, and virtual care, are emerging in the field of healthcare; yet, questions remain of how they impact the therapeutic relationship. Digital health technologies have the potential to expand opportunities for interaction between the healthcare provider and client, and thus, improve clients’ access to care. Still, a number of risks exist regarding legal issues, ethical considerations, outcomes from treatment, and provider workloads. This chapter explores the advancement of digital health technologies and the digital therapeutic relationship through a discussion on its potential outcomes and considerations for using and integrating digital technology within healthcare. It also includes a review of how to prevent harm and mitigate risks through the provision of informed consent, policies and guidelines, and licensing and scope of practice.
