ABSTRACT

The role of the healthcare provider, as well as their attitudes, beliefs, and assumptions, can serve to either support or hinder the development of the therapeutic relationship. This chapter begins with an overview of the healthcare provider role within the orientation phase, working phase, and termination phase of the therapeutic relationship, and then progresses to a review of the literature on attitudes, beliefs, assumptions, and stigma. It follows with a discussion on addressing problematic attitudes, beliefs, and assumptions using evidence-based interventions, models of the recovery-oriented perspective, and the facilitators and barriers to healthcare providers working in partnership with clients who experience challenges with mental health.
