ABSTRACT

The chapter explores understandings of distancing in educational drama and theatre, from aesthetic and pedagogic points of view. A point of reference is the conception of distancing as topos: in rhetorics, a category or a place from where a well-known topic in a field can be illuminated and discussed. Another point of reference is process drama: a vital genre in drama education. The chapter intends to broaden the understanding of distancing in educational drama and theatre work through references to historic and contemporary field literature and examples of distancing as artistic expression. An essential point is to view distancing as an aspect of estrangement. The chapter contains audio and video samples with links that work for streaming.
