ABSTRACT

Military children experience childhood uniquely due to the complex careers of their parents. Military kids face numerous challenges such as frequent moves, the deployment cycle and navigating a parent’s traumatic injury or war-related illness. Simultaneously, due to their experience, these young people also possess tremendous assets such as adaptability, diverse perspectives and sacrifice. This chapter explores using drama and storytelling as a tool of self-expression and meaning-making with the dynamic population of military children. Applying her experience as a military spouse and parent, theater artist Sarah Dolens-Moon reflects on the process of developing We Serve Too!, a drama-based storytelling residency program with military children at family support sites in Arizona and New Mexico.
