ABSTRACT
What role can drama in education (DiE) play in teacher training? This chapter focuses on the journey of two student teachers exploring teaching and learning through drama at a Swiss University of Teacher Education, a context in which DiE is still novel. Following a semester-long training by a drama specialist, the student teachers developed original 90-minute lessons for a range of primary-school subjects. The lessons were observed and filmed, revealing that the student teachers felt empowered by their work with drama. In addition, their creative process and their self-reported sense of professional growth were documented via narrative interviews. After working intensively with drama over three semesters, the student teachers reported feeling more open-minded, empathetic, and spontaneous while teaching. They described the process of applying drama to their teaching as daring and rewarding.
