ABSTRACT

In his seminal book Convergence Culture, Henry Jenkins outlines the principles of transmedia storytelling, where a cohesive narrative is told across multiple texts and media. This essay describes my practice-led doctoral research which examines the application of transmedia storytelling to theater performance. It focuses on the practical aspect of the research, which involves creating a mobile application prototype with activities to complement a live theater performance. By collaborating on the project with a local theater company with a strong focus on students and young audiences, I also begin to uncover the potential of transmedia theater in drama education. Given the shifting states of performance and education in the post-pandemic world, transmedia theater would allow students greater engagement with dramatic texts through digital interactivity and narrativity.
