ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author outlines the kind of person that education is expected to create as globalization progresses in the current world, and what changes language education must make in order to meet that demand. He discusses what kind of knowledge, abilities and qualities human beings need to survive in the 21st century. The author provides an overview of the new language teaching approach, the “Social Networking Approach”. The use of social media has made it possible for individuals to transmit various information easily and quickly, and with the development of hard disk technology, it has become possible to store all of this information online. The author describes concrete classroom activities that use this approach, and examines how this new language education approach emphasizes the development of global citizenship rather than that of language skills specific to the language classroom.
