Maritime Security in the South Atlantic

This chapter describes a pessimistic outlook for the provision of maritime security in the South Atlantic. The available data indicate that drug trafficking, illegal fishing and piracy have expanded and become endemic. The promise of a vast maritime community has collapsed owing to the absence of a regional power or coalition of countries to sponsor it and increasing great power rivalry.
