ABSTRACT

With the ice melting due to climate change, the Arctic has gained increased attention in international relations, maritime security and maritime governance studies. This chapter contributes to a better understanding of the changing dynamics of the Arctic by discussing the European Union (EU), China, US and Russia's main policies towards the governance of the Arctic. Is there evidence to suggest an increasing level of geopolitical conflict over contested domains in the area? The analysis suggests that there seems to be more potential for conflict in the Arctic area than previously. However, despite a more geopolitical volatile environment, the Arctic has remained peaceful, characterised by a dense network of institutionalised international cooperation respected by all the major powers. The chapter also explores the various environmental, geopolitical, economic and minority rights aspects of the region in light of recent years’ developments.
