ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the theory and practice of naval warfare today. It examines traditional ideas about maritime strategy based on securing and exploiting control of the sea, and shows how these ideas continue to influence naval strategy and policy today. The chapter discusses contemporary naval policy and explains the “return to sea control” that has seen many navies re-focus their attention on traditional war-fighting roles after a period where non-traditional “maritime security” roles gained prominence. The chapter also explores alternative approaches, that stand outside the dominant tradition, and argues that for many navies these offer a more realistic path to follow. It examines the challenges facing contemporary navies within the context of a contested joint operating environment, and argues that, despite changing context and technology, traditional ideas still have considerable relevance if they are adapted to match current conditions.
