ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the elements of true crime podcasting by focusing on shows that exhibit a ‘recessive’ approach to epistemology. Comparing three contemporary podcasts – Someone Knows Something, Lost in Larrimah and Death in Ice Valley – to earlier shows such as Calling All Cars and This American Life, the chapter shows how podcasters are changing conventions established by docucrime audio when it comes to establishing facts as such. In doing so, these podcasts reinvent what will count as a realist aesthetic.
