ABSTRACT

Woman’s Hour is the longest-running radio programme for women in the world. First broadcast on the BBC in October 1946, it built on a legacy of programming for women that had begun in 1923. This chapter explores the development of the programme which, as well as domesticity, has always included items on politics, health, culture, and work, amongst much else. An important role would be played by listeners and Woman’s Hour was a trailblazer in giving them a voice. It was, and still is, produced by a predominantly female production team and the chapter draws on programme documentation and archives, as well as personal experience, to reveal how it evolved and moved with the times.
