ABSTRACT

Learner-centered facilitation supports lesson study groups to develop a more in-depth understanding of how to meet student needs. We present a case of cross-cultural pre-service teachers engaging in lesson study and illustrate the process of learner-centered facilitation and how it can result in a deeper knowledge in teachers of not only effective ways to meet student learning needs but also how to trust and guide their own students through productive struggle. Examples of the approach, facilitation guidelines, and information on the mindset and skills needed to implement learner-centered facilitation, including direction on how to resolve critical situations that can arise while facilitating a lesson study group, are discussed.
