ABSTRACT

The mock-up lesson provides a rehearsal opportunity of the research lesson and is increasingly being added to lesson study cycles in the United States. It is where time is afforded to slow down the act of teaching for examination alongside student sense-making. During the mock-up lesson, the research lesson instructor tries teaching the lesson or key elements of the lesson, with lesson study team members taking on the roles of different students. By taking on these perspectives, team members and the instructor can notice elements of the lesson they might have missed during the planning process. This chapter examines two elementary mathematics cases where lesson study teams go through a mock-up lesson. Insight into the process and the types of learning that occur for lesson study teams are shared.
