ABSTRACT

This chapter will describe the diversity of the roles of the facilitators in a professional development lesson study group. The chapter is based on the work of the two authors with a group of eight primary generalist in-service experienced teachers. The two teacher educators (a specialist in mathematics didactic and a specialist in teaching and learning) acted as facilitators and as knowledgeable others for two academic years. Based on situations and examples drawn from this experience, this chapter will describe and categorize the roles that the teacher educators played during the process (convenor, teacher trainer, researcher and group member). In addition, practical guidelines and tips for lesson study facilitators are also included.
