ABSTRACT

Trying to spot the many causes and factors involved in the sexual abuse crisis, the question arises concerning the ideological dimensions or what role could be played by currently held theological views. A discernment needs to be undertaken in order to identify theological trends that could justify the great tolerance regarding that behavior and the passivity on the part of pastors and authorities. The main culprit could be a flawed Christian Anthropology, a naïve Ecclesiology, and possibly a broad view on the meaning and role of Christian faith in advanced societies that could elicit a very relaxed or overconfident attitude toward individuals and culture. The aim is to frame the analysis in a “cultural-evolutionary” model in which a given institution learns from its own failures and develops more fitting survival strategies.
